Job description: Job Context

  • Background: WorldFish undertakes a study to understand the performance of a genetically improved rohu strain under the usual farming practices followed by the fish farmers in Bangladesh. The Research Assistant will play an important role in execution of the research by organizing all activities on the ground, e.g. farmer selection, fish sampling, data collection, coordination with relevant stakeholders, etc.
  • Eligibility, Location and Duration: Any places under Rajshahi division. Interviews are expected to be held in February 2021 and only shortlisted candidates will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence in March 2021 for an initial twelve (12) months fixed term contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding availability.

Job Responsibilities

  • Select the required number of fish farmers, ideally ten for each study area, following a pre-defined set of criteria for an on-farm trial of three rohu strains: 1) a genetically improved rohu, 2) a control line, and 3) a well-regarded commercial breed available in the market.
  • Ensure the selected farmers are aware of and agree to the terms and conditions applied, and formal agreements are made with them accordingly.
  • Ensure the distribution of PIT-tagged rohu fingerling to the selected farmers according to the study design.
  • Maintain records of all inputs used in the ponds along with the management practices followed by the farmers.
  • Accomplish periodical fish sampling, data collection, water quality testing, etc.
  • Engage the relevant stakeholders, i.e. the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, WorldFish partners, etc. in the study to a reasonable extent.
  • Ensure that the farmers are visited regularly and any issues worthy of management attention are reported immediately.
  • Maintain all necessary data, observations, etc. in an organized-way and share with relevant colleagues.
  • Establish coordination with the WorldFish colleagues, partners, and stakeholders related to the on-farm trial.

  • This job is open to Bangladesh Nationals with the following skills and qualifications:
  • A bachelor/master degree in Fisheries/ Aquaculture from any recognized university
  • Sound knowledge of fish biology, aquaculture, and water quality parameters
  • Familiarity with rural fish farming communities and willingness to work closely with fish farmers
  • Ability and willingness to ride a motorbike with a valid driving license
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Proficient both in Bangla and English
  • Good command in basic computer applications, i.e. MS Office, email correspondence, digital data management, etc.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience, preferably in a similar role
  • Competencies Desired:
  • Prior experience in research involving rural fish farming communities
  • Familiarity with aquaculture stakeholders including the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, and different private sector actors
  • Experience in carp aquaculture
  • Independent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and ability to cooperate with people from different background
  • Proficiency both in Bangla and English

Salary

  • This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with approximate annual salary ranging between BDT 624,700 – BDT 662,745 per annum. WorldFish NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension / provident fund contribution.
